We all rely on electricity so power outages can feel unsettling. Here's why it may be happening and what you can do next.
Power outages can be disruptive. While we work year-round to keep the system safe and reliable, service can still be affected by things outside our control. When that happens, our crews work to restore service as quickly as safety allows.
Power can be affected by a range of unexpected events — from weather to accidents to planned work that's necessary to keep the system running safely.

Some common causes might be:
Weather and natural events: Strong winds, ice, wildfire and severe storms
Equipment issues or traffic accidents: Damage to poles, lines or electrical equipment
Scheduled maintenance: Temporary outages needed to complete repairs or upgrades
Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS): Used as a last resort when extreme weather creates wildfire risk
Rotating outages: Rare, short interruptions used to balance demand and prevent wider outages
Electrical issues: Wiring or grounding problems and faulty equipment
If your power is out, a quick check can sometimes help identify what’s going on.
Look outside to see if nearby homes or businesses are affected
If your neighbors still have power, it might be something going on at your address
If it’s safe to do so, you can also try these troubleshooting steps.
Troubleshooting tips
Reset any GFCI outlets, often found in kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms
Check your electrical panel to see if any circuits have tripped — in some cases, you may need to reset all your breakers by turning them off for about 15 seconds and then turning them back on
Check appliances for loose or damaged plugs or poor connections, and repair or replace them as needed

When power is restored
To prevent possible power-surge damage and avoid overloading the system, unplug sensitive electronics and turn off major appliances before service returns. If lights seem unusually dim or bright afterward, turn off the breaker and contact PGE.
Generators and battery systems can help some households during longer interruptions when used safely. If you’re considering backup power, review safety guidance and choose what works best for your needs.
Generators can be a convenient backup during a power outage when used correctly. Review safety tips to protect yourself and our crews.
Battery storage systems enable your solar panels to power your home during an emergency or outage.
